S.M.A.R.T. Goals Are A Way Of Life

As we charge into 2021 we need to revisit S.M.A.R.T Goals. We believe in them so much, not just with our fitness but our way of life. Being goal oriented sounds so regimented to many people & it scares them. They often think of past failures or believe that having a goal will make their lives too strict. What they don’t realize is that having a goal, sticking to the plan & crushing it is a way to freedom, in every aspect of the word. To help you have a killer 2021 take our S.M.A.R.T Goal breakdown with you wherever you go & with whatever you want to accomplish!

Start with one to three S.M.A.R.T Goals. Anything beyond three tends to get a bit sticky. If you do not know what a S.M.A.R.T Goal is they are specific, manageable, actionable, realistic & timely goals that you get to work on as much, or as little, as you like. Let’s break it down shall we.

Specific: because you focus on one thing at a time. Get in shape. Ok, cool. Get in shape to do what is more like it. Say, train for a Spartan race in North Carolina, run the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City etc… That’s much better.
Manageable because you need to be able to fit it into your already busy schedule. Training for an Ironman Triathlon might be too much for you at this time, a Sprint or Olympic Tri might be more up your alley, not just for you, but those around you as well.

Actionable: is a must. If you cannot take action then there is no point in setting it, at least for now. Timing is everything. Be sure to talk your goal(s) over with those around you too. This helps alleviate potential stressors of accomplishing your goals. Trust us, they’ll appreciate you for including them in the plan.

Realistic: expectations are huge. It kindof goes back to being manageable. If you’ve never done a triathlon, an Ironman would not be realistic, or a marathon when you have not done a 10k. You can get there, just use some stepping stones to make it happen.

Timely is the last, but arguably one of the most important pieces. Having a deadline to accomplish your goal is huge. It says, “I am focused,” and the days have purpose. If the days do not have purpose & focus they are often wasted. We tend to put it off one more day or pledge, “to start on Monday.” We keep believing the lie because it feels good, for the moment. But then the year has passed & we’ve accomplished very little.

To help you be successful we’ve included a few of the S.M.A.R.T Goals our members have set for themselves at CrossFit Justice. We helped them do this through our Goal Setting Sessions at the end of 2020. Take a look:

  • Read two books in January of 2021. One on philosophy & one on physiology.
  • Participate in the January Nutrition Challenge to lose 3lbs by the end of the month.
  • Receive private programming to work on grip strength to help with Spartan Race in March 2021.

SEE!! These goals are simple & to the point. If you have a S.M.A.R.T Goal you’d like to share with us, or need help refining post it below. We’d love to hear from you. Happy Training!!
